Set within a year after the events of Batman Begins (2005), Batman, Lieutenant James Gordon, and new District Attorney Harvey Dent successfully begin to round up the criminals that plague Gotham City, until a mysterious and sadistic criminal mastermind known only as "The Joker" appears in Gotham, creating a new wave of chaos. Batman's struggle against The Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to "confront everything he believes" and improve his technology to stop him. A love triangle develops between Bruce Wayne, Dent, and Rachel Dawes.

Batman: [as Joker is holding Rachel out a window] Let her go!

The Joker: [giving him a look] Very poor choice of words...

The Joker: You have nothing, nothing to threaten me with. Nothing to do with all your strength

The Joker: What's the time?

Lt. James Gordon: What difference does that make?

The Joker: Well, depending on the time, he may in one spot, or several.

Lt. James Gordon: [to Harvey Dent] Everyone knows you're Gotham's White Knight.

[Batman slams The Joker's head on a table]

The Joker: Never start with the head, the victim gets all fuzzy. He can't feel the next...

[Batman slams a fist down on Joker's hand]

The Joker: See?
